The inside scope of the 2012 NPA Virginia State Bodybuilding & Fitness/Figure/ Bikini Championships :

April 14, 2012 the NPA opened its season with the Mr. /Ms. Virginia Bodybuilding & Fitness/Figure/Bikini Championships. This contest in its 13th year was held at Virginia
State University’s Virginia Hall in the Anderson – Turner auditorium for a seventh consecutive year.  It was the second largest NPA state show since the Mr. Virginia left the
AAU. What a great show, very successful.  Thirty five signed up for the event however due to family illness one bikini athlete withdrew from the event which left thirty four
conditioned athletes to entertain their fans, friends and families with approximately (400) in the audience for prejudging and finals which made for a very good day!

The contest started off with the Bikini athletes.  No masters in this division so we started in the open with Erika Jurkowski, Mechanicsville, VA who was the sole (under 5’5”)
short class contestant and earned the short class title.  There were 3 in the (5’5” +), tall class.  Starting with Justyna Beddoe, Hampton, VA who placed 3rd, Anne Johnson,
Petersburg, VA placed 2nd and the winner of the class was Crystal Starr, Hampton, VA.  When Jurkowski and Starr met in the finals for the overall title, Jurkowski proved
to be too much for Starr and received 6 of 7 first place votes from the judges.   Jurkowski was crowned the Ms. Virginia Bikini Overall Champion.

The figure contestants would be next up for review. In the masters (40+) figure, three athletes represented the division.  In 3rd place,  Marie Sanders, Lorton, VA, was the
recipient as 2nd place was awarded to Jennifer Szabo, Chesterfield, VA and the winner of the division was Sara Mueller, Alexandria, VA. Sara really looked good and was very
prepared.

In the women open figure (Under 5’5”) short class there was one who crossed over from the masters division, Marie Sanders, Lorton, VA.  The tall class figure had two in it.
Second place was awarded to Jennifer Szabo, Chesterfield, VA whom also crossed over from the masters.  The winner once again was the beautiful Sara Mueller, Alexander,
VA. When Sanders and Mueller met for the overall title, no question that Mueller duplicated and got the same results as she did in the Masters class, except this time she was
declared the overall open figure champion.

This year we had one teenager and he performed and it’s a shame all of the other teens stayed home. This young man Tommy Waddill, Chester, VA was ready and deserved
the teen title this year.

A new category of juniors were introduced this year. Two good looking athletes (20-22) took advantage of this opportunity. In 2nd place making a competitive effort was
Tommy Kirby, Lynchburg, VA. The winner of the class was Zack Moon, Roanoke, VA who earned 6 of the 7 judges  votes.

In the men lightweight novice   these are men under (175) pound bodyweight and never won an overall title in any sanctioned event; there were eleven, the largest novice
class we’ve had thus far in all our shows.  11th place was represent by Francis Stevens, Midlothian, VA and one of it’s finest, (law enforcement officer), 10th place was
Mike Clark, Annandale, VA making his debut, 9th place was awarded to Brian Simpson, Lynchburg, VA,  8th place went to Tommy Waddill, Chester, the teen champion, 7th place
went to Zack Moon, Roanoke the Junior champion, 6th place was awarded to Danny Hydro, Woodbridge, VA, and top five started with Alex Fulbright,  Johnson City, TN, 4th place
was awarded to Marcus Tines, Warrenton, VA, 3rd place went to Larry Stark Jr., Nottingham, MD, 2nd place was presented to Kelvin Nesbitt, Bolling Springs, SC and the winner of
this tough and big class went to 53 years old Russ Rainer, Midlothian, VA. Russ weighed in at 128 lbs coming down over 30 lbs to prepare for this show. He looked phenomenally
well and was the oldest athlete in the competition.

In the heavyweight class there were two. Second place was awarded to walk in Devilla Eustaguio, Midlothian, VA and the winner of the class Greg Smith, Vienna, VA earned
a perfect score. The Overall Novice title showdown between Rainer and Smith was a run away in the decision. Only one judge thought Smith should have won.  Russ Rainer was
very prepared for this event and we congratulate him on a very tough victory.

After the novice male athletes it was time for the women bodybuilders to perform.  This year’s masters division presented two (40+) athletes that look good. Venus Glover,
Richmond, VA who won this title last year and was Ms. North Carolina 2011 came in a little off. She was carrying a little extra weight that she’s vowed to rid by the next show.
The winner of the division was newcomer Susie Rodriguez, Gainesville, VA. These were the only two female bodybuilders. They both crossed over into the open. Susie won and
represented the middleweight class. Venus represented the heavyweight class and when the two went at each other for the overall title; Susie received 5 of the 7 judge’s first
place votes which earned her the title of Ms. Virginia 2012.
Venus did manage to win the best poser performance and title female best poser.

The men masters started with the 50+ division.  There were only two; however both of these athletes were two of the toughest athletes in the competition.  Seeing Russ win
the novice he then competed in the division he was suppose to be in and finished 2nd unanimously.  The winner with a perfect score was Marshall Johnson, Leesburg, VA who
looked absolutely incredible.

There were ten good looking athletes in the (40-49) division. This too was the largest (40-49) division we’ve had so far in NPA competition.  10th place was awarded to
Devilla Eustaguio, Midlothian, VA, 9th place was presented to Brian Simpson, Lynchburg, VA, 8th place was Michael Clark, Annandale, VA who was a first timer that had the right
attitude, 7th place went to veteran Hakeem Ali-Ber, Chesterfield, VA , 6th place was awarded to Alex Fulbright, Johnson City, TN, 5th place went to Travis Pardue, Waxhaw, NC,
4th place was pro qualified law enforcement officer Gary Waterman, Lynchburg, VA, 3rd place was the tough Tim Rose, Rocky Mt., NC, 2nd place was awarded to Kelvin Nesbitt,
Bolling Springs, SC and the deserving winner of the class was Fred Clemmons, Windsor, VA.

In the men (35-39) division there were four.  4th place went to Danny Hydro, Woodbridge, VA, 3rd place was awarded to Tim Rose, Rocky Mt., NC, 2nd place finisher was
Kelvin Nesbitt, Bolling Springs, SC and the winner of the division was veteran and pro qualified Sherman Newton, Baltimore, Maryland.  When Johnson, Clemmons and Newton took
the stage the battle of the titans sparked.  All three of these gladiators were prepared to win. When all the smoke cleared Johnson got 5 of the 7 first place votes, followed by
Clemmons, with Newton finishing third. This was the most competitive Masters Virginia I’ve witnessed in the history of the contest. Congratulations go out to all three of these
champions.

The men open lightweight class was the second largest class of the night with ten good looking athletes. Tenth place belonged to new comer and crossover; Francis Stevens,
Midlothian, VA, 9th place was claimed by Holden Walsh, Ashland, VA, 8th place went to Marcus Tines, Warrenton, VA, 7th place was claimed by Zack Moon, Roanoke, VA, 6th place
was Larry Stark Jr. Nottingham, MD, 5th place was awarded to Tim Rose, Rocky Mt., NC, 4th place went to Kelvin Nesbitt, Bolling Springs, SC, 3rd place was awarded to Gary Waterman,
Lynchburg, VA, 2nd place was presented to Russ Rainer and the winner of the class belong to Troy Wyne, Kilmarnock,  who received 3 of the 7 judges first place votes.

In the men middleweight class, there were 5 good looking athletes.  Fifth place was awarded to Alex Fulbright, Johnson City, TN, 4th place went Dr. Todd Berry, Richmond, VA,
3rd place was claimed by Travis Pardue, Waxhaw, NC, 2nd place was awarded to Dr. Rodney Gaines, Colonial Heights, VA, and the winner of the class was Marshall Johnson, Leesburg,
VA who again had a perfect score and received all first place votes by the panel of seven.

In the light heavyweight class there were two.  Second place was awarded to Sherman Newton, Baltimore, MD, losing by one point and hadn’t lost a show in quite awhile. The winner
of the class was Greg Smith, Vienna, VA. There was only one athlete to represent the heavyweight class.  His name was Fred Clemmons, Windsor, VA and he represented the big guys
respectfully.

When the men open class winners came out together for the overall title, it was on. What a battle. All of these class winners look magnificent and was very much ready to win.
Troy Wyne, Marshall Johnson, Greg Smith and Fred Clemmons rumbled for the crowd. The fans were in awe watching these guys go at it. When it was time to pump it up one winner
emerged; fifty one year old Marshall Johnson was crowned Mr. 2012 Virginia. Congratulations Marshall for you are truly a Champion and a deserving winner. Best poser award went
to Dr. Rodney Gaines, Colonial Heights, Virginia.

The audience of about 400 + spectators enjoyed the show. The NPA would like to take time to thank all the athletes, fans, families and friends that made this show a very successful
